After getting the lead actors, Karishma Kapoor, Hrithik Roshan and Jaya Bachchan, on board, Khalid Mohamed approached his boss at the time, Pradeep Guha. It was cinematographer Santosh Sivan who encouraged Khalid Mohamed to consider directing his own script.Its release was delayed since Rakesh Roshan had wanted "Kaho Naa. Pyaar Hai" (2000) was Hrithik Roshan's first release but this was the first film he had signed. This was the directorial debut of the writer and film critic Khalid Mohamed.Anu Malik, who composed the rest of the songs in the film, was not happy to share credits with another composer and had said that he could have composed as good a song as Rahman had. He composed only one song for this film - a qawwali.
